[Sanskrit »die große Erzählung«] die, -, ein verloren gegangener indischer Märchenroman, der in einem nordwestlichen Prakrit verfasst war. Stark abgewandelt und durch eingeschachtelte Erzählungen aufgebläht, liegt er in den kaschmirischen Bearbeitungen des Somadeva und Kshemendra wie in der nepalesischen Bearbeitung des Budhasvamin vor. Als Verfasser gilt allgemein der Dichter Gunadhya, der im 1. oder 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gelebt haben dürfte. Der Roman erzählte die Abenteuer des Prinzen Naravahanadatta, besonders seine Liebe zu der Hetäre Madanamancuka, die ihm vom Fürsten der halbgöttlichen Vidyadaras geraubt wurde. Auf der Suche nach der Verlorenen verstrickte sich der Prinz in zahlreiche Liebesabenteuer, doch gewann er die Geliebte wieder und wurde Herrscher der Vidyadaras. Die Brihatkatha ist neben dem Mahabharata und dem Ramayana die dritte hervorragende Quelle und zugleich Vorbild für die poetische Stoffe der klassischen Literatur Indiens.
